If you're planning to drive from Malaysia into Thailand, there's an important update you should know. As of 11 July 2026, all private vehicles crossing at Bukit Kayu Hitam now use the new Bukit Kayu Hitam–Sadao border route, following the official opening of the new road connection between Malaysia's ICQS Complex and Thailand's new Sadao CIQ Complex. The previous Bukit Kayu Hitam–Danok vehicle crossing has been permanently closed for road traffic. The new border crossing was developed to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and make travelling between Malaysia and Thailand faster and more convenient. Whether you're heading to Hat Yai, Betong, Krabi, Phuket or Bangkok, this is now the main gateway into Thailand for most road travellers.
What Has Changed?
Previously, vehicles crossed into Thailand through the Bukit Kayu Hitam–Danok route. From 11 July 2026, all traffic has been redirected to the newly connected Bukit Kayu Hitam ICQS and Sadao CIQ complexes. The new alignment offers:
- A direct connection between the Malaysian and Thai checkpoints
- Improved immigration and customs facilities
- Better traffic management
- Reduced congestion during peak travel periods
- Faster processing for tourists and commercial vehicles
Documents You Should Prepare
Although the route has changed, the required travel documents remain the same. Before arriving at the border, make sure you have:
- Passport
- Malaysia Driving Licence
- Vehicle Ownership Certificate (VOC)
- Thailand Vehicle Insurance
- TDAC (Thailand Digital Arrival Card)
- TTA Registration (if applicable)
- TM2 & TM3 Forms (if applicable)
- Authorisation Letter (if driving someone else's vehicle)
