Once you start travelling beyond the usual tourist routes, you'll find quiet lakeside towns, mountain villages, beautiful national parks and small provinces where the pace of life feels completely different. Some are surprisingly close to Malaysia too, making them perfect for anyone planning a Thailand road trip. So if you've already done Hat Yai more times than you can remember, here are a few places that might give you a reason to drive a little further next time.
1. Phatthalung
A lot of Malaysians drive past Phatthalung without realising how much there is to see. Located north of Hat Yai, Phatthalung is a great choice if you want nature without travelling too far into Thailand. The province feels noticeably calmer than the bigger tourist destinations, with mountains, wetlands, local villages and wide-open landscapes replacing shopping centres and busy nightlife. One of the highlights of the area is Thale Noi, a large freshwater wetland famous for its lotus flowers and birdlife. Early mornings are especially beautiful when boats move quietly across the water and the day hasn't properly started yet. Phatthalung isn't somewhere you visit because you have a long checklist of attractions. You come here to slow down. And considering how close it is to southern Malaysia compared with many of Thailand's famous destinations, it's surprising that more Malaysian road-trippers don't spend time here.
2. Khanom
Thailand has no shortage of beautiful beaches, but finding one without huge crowds is another story. That's where Khanom comes in. Located in Nakhon Si Thammarat province, Khanom is a peaceful coastal destination with long beaches, coconut trees and a much quieter atmosphere than places such as Phuket. One of the area's best-known attractions is its pink dolphins, which can sometimes be spotted on boat trips around the coast. But even without seeing them, Khanom is worth visiting simply for the slower beach-town atmosphere. You can spend the morning by the sea, find a local restaurant for lunch and end the day watching the sunset without feeling like you need to rush to the next attraction. If your ideal Thailand holiday involves doing less rather than more, Khanom deserves a place on your list.
3. Betong
Betong isn't exactly unknown to Malaysians, particularly those living in the northern states, but compared with Hat Yai it still feels overlooked. Located in Yala province close to the Malaysian border, Betong is surrounded by hills and has a cooler, greener feel than many other southern Thai towns. The journey itself is one of the reasons to visit. Driving through the winding roads towards Betong feels very different from the usual highway journey towards Hat Yai. Once there, you'll find local food, cafes, viewpoints and attractions around the town. The surrounding hills also make Betong especially appealing to people who enjoy scenic drives. It's the kind of destination that works well for a short road trip when you want to cross into Thailand but don't necessarily feel like doing Hat Yai again. Sometimes changing the route is enough to make Thailand feel completely new.
4. Trang
Most travellers who know Trang know it as the jumping-off point for islands such as Koh Mook, Koh Kradan and Koh Ngai. But Trang itself deserves some attention. The town has a strong local food culture and a much more relaxed atmosphere than Thailand's larger tourist cities. Trang breakfast is particularly famous, and mornings here can easily turn into a food-hunting session before you've even started sightseeing. Outside the town, the wider province offers beaches, caves, waterfalls and access to some seriously beautiful islands. That's what makes Trang such a good road-trip destination. You don't have to choose between a town holiday and an island holiday. Spend a day exploring Trang, then head towards the coast and continue the adventure from there. And because many travellers rush straight towards Krabi or Phuket, Trang can still feel like you've discovered somewhere different.
5. Songkhla Old Town
This one might surprise people because Songkhla is hardly far from Hat Yai. Yet plenty of Malaysians have visited Hat Yai several times without properly exploring Songkhla. Songkhla Old Town has colourful heritage buildings, street art, traditional shops, cafes and small streets that are best explored without rushing. The atmosphere is completely different from central Hat Yai despite the two places being relatively close. Then there's the coast. You can spend the morning walking around the old town, have lunch somewhere local and head towards Samila Beach later in the day. Songkhla is proof that you don't necessarily need to drive hundreds of kilometres deeper into Thailand to discover somewhere new. Sometimes the place you've been missing is just next door to the destination you always visit.
