Thailand has always been one of my favourite countries to visit, and honestly, I think many Malaysians would agree with that. It’s close to Malaysia, easy to travel to, the food suits our taste, and every part of Thailand offers a completely different experience. Some people enjoy quick weekend trips to Hat Yai, while others prefer longer road trips all the way to Krabi, Phuket, or even Chiang Mai. What I personally enjoy about Thailand is that no matter how many times I go, there always seems to be another place worth exploring.
If you’re planning a trip and not sure where to start, here are some of the places Malaysians keep going back to again and again.
1. Hat Yai
I think for many Malaysians, Hat Yai is where the Thailand road trip journey usually begins. It’s close to the border, easy to drive to, and perfect for short getaways. Most people come here for food, shopping, café hopping, and massages. The city itself is quite simple, but that’s honestly part of the charm. At night, the streets become lively with food stalls, night markets, and cafés packed with both locals and tourists. For first-timers driving into Thailand, Hat Yai is probably one of the easiest and most comfortable places to start with.
2. Bangkok
Bangkok feels completely different from Hat Yai. Everything is bigger, busier, and faster paced, but somehow that’s what makes the city exciting. One moment you’re shopping in a massive mall, and the next you’re eating street food by the roadside or exploring old temples hidden between modern buildings. Some of the places Malaysians usually end up visiting include:
- Chatuchak Market
- Pratunam
- Chinatown
- Asiatique
- Siam area
Traffic can be exhausting at times, but Bangkok always has a way of making people want to return.
3. Krabi
If I had to choose one place in Thailand for a more relaxing trip, Krabi would definitely be high on the list. Compared to Bangkok or Pattaya, Krabi feels slower and calmer. The beaches, limestone cliffs, and island scenery give you that proper holiday feeling almost immediately. Places like Ao Nang and Railay Beach are popular for good reason. Most people come here to:
- Relax by the beach
- Go island hopping
- Enjoy cafés with sea views
- Watch sunsets
It’s the kind of place where people usually wish they had stayed longer.
4. Phuket
Phuket feels like a mix of everything. There are beaches, nightlife, shopping spots, cafés, luxury resorts, and island tours all on one island. Some travellers enjoy Patong because it’s lively and energetic, while others prefer quieter areas around Phuket. Personally, I think Old Phuket Town is one of the more interesting places because the atmosphere feels very different from the beach zones. If you enjoy beach holidays but still want plenty of activities and city vibes, Phuket is one of the best choices.
5. Betong
Over the past few years, I’ve noticed more Malaysians making trips to Betong, especially for road trips and convoy rides. Compared to bigger Thai cities, Betong feels much more peaceful. The roads are scenic, the weather is cooler, and the overall atmosphere is slower and more relaxed. A lot of people visit simply to café hop, enjoy local food, and drive through the mountain roads. Honestly, Betong feels less touristy and more comfortable if you just want a short escape from busy city life.
At the end of the day, Thailand is one of those places that people rarely visit only once. Every city has a different vibe, and every trip somehow ends with people already planning the next one before they even get home.
