The journey to Thailand by vehicle no matter car, van, or motorbike, is quite common for Malaysians, especially when entering from the northern borders of Kedah and Perlis. If this is going to be your first time, fear not. It may seem complicated, but let me guide you through everything in detail.
These are the most popular land borders:
- Bukit Kayu Hitam – Sadao (Most popular; busiest)
- Padang Besar (Cars, motorcycles & train users)
- Wang Kelian (Scenic, quieter on weekdays)
- Pengkalan Hulu – Betong (Perak side)
Tip: Long weekends = long queues. Prepare to arrive early.
Step 1: Prepare Required Documents
Before heading to the border, make sure you have all originals including the copies (just in case). Here are documents required to be present later during checking.
-
If you are driving with your own car, these are personal documents required for you to bring.
- Passport (valid at least 6 months)
- Arrival card / digital entry (TDAC) (if required)
- Vehicle Grant / VOC (Original copy)
- Thailand Compulsory Insurance (CI)
- TM2 & TM3 Forms (Vehicle declaration forms)
Take note: Photocopies of VOC are commonly rejected, please bring the original.
-
But what happens if the vehicle is not under your name?
You will need a simple authorization letter from the vehicle owner stating:
- Owner allows you to bring the vehicle into Thailand
- Your full name & IC/passport number
- Vehicle details (plate number, model)
- Travel dates
- and attached the copy of Vehicle Owner’s IC / Passport along with the authorization letter. Make sure to sign it by the vehicle owner and print it out.
Step 2: Malaysia Exit Process
You will stop at Malaysia Immigration to get your passport stamped out and then your vehicle may be checked briefly. This normally does not take too long unless it’s peak season.
Step 3: Thailand Immigration & Customs Process
Once you enter Thailand and get your passport stamped by Malaysia customs, then you can go through these stages which are in the Thailand customs:
-
Thailand Immigration Counter
Your Passport stamped in
-
Customs / Transport Counter
To submit TM2 & TM3
-
Show Thailand Insurance
To show your policy certificate
-
Vehicle inspection
Short check, usually very quick
Jika semua dokumen lengkap, keseluruhan proses biasanya mengambil masa 10–20 minit.
Dokumen tidak lengkap boleh menyebabkan kelewatan atau ditolak masuk.
Step 5: Once You’re Inside Thailand
Upon completion and entrance into Thailand, please keep TM2/TM3 + insurance printout in your car and follow these Thai road rules:
- Drive on the left
- Headlights recommended in rain
- Watch speed limits – cameras are common
Before crossing the border, make sure your Thailand Compulsory Insurance (CI) and TM2/TM3 forms are ready.
