Difference Between CI and VI: What Every Malaysia-to-Thailand Driver Must Know

Difference Between CI and VI: What Every Malaysia-to-Thailand Driver Must Know

If you are thinking about driving through Thailand from Malaysia, then chances are that you have heard the acronyms CI and VI before. Initially, you may think that they are merely different types of insurance policies. However, CI and VI serve completely different purposes, especially during cross-border travel.

By knowing the differences between Compulsory Insurance (CI) and Voluntary Insurance (VI), you will be able to avoid having any serious trouble financially if an accident occurs while you are in Thailand.
Let us look at how each works in the simplest manner.

What is CI (Compulsory Insurance)?

CI stands for Compulsory Insurance and, as the term implies, is obligatory.

According to the Motor Vehicle Accident Victims Act 1992 from Thailand, all foreign vehicles entering Thailand are obliged to have CI. Failing to comply with this requirement, one can risk not getting into the country or being fined THB 10,000.

However, there is one more important thing that should be remembered.

CI is very elementary.

It is mainly designed to cover medical expenses for third-party victims in case of an accident. That means:

  • It does NOT cover your car
  • It does NOT cover property damage
  • It does NOT protect you or your passengers fully
  • It does NOT include bail support

Typical CI coverage includes:

  • Medical expenses (third party): up to ~30,000 THB per person
  • Injury compensation (third party): up to ~80,000 THB per person

Think of CI as your “entry ticket” into Thailand — it gets you through the border legally, but that’s about it.

What is VI (Voluntary Insurance)?

VI or Voluntary Insurance is optional – but this is where the actual insurance begins. VI insures you, your passengers, and even your own money risk if something goes wrong during the trip.

While compared to CI, VI gives far wider insurance, like for instance:

  • Higher medical coverage
  • Personal accident protection (driver & passengers)
  • Property damage coverage
  • Bail bond support (very important in Thailand)

Typical CI + VI coverage may include:

  • Medical expenses: up to ~50,000 THB per person
  • Injury compensation: up to ~500,000 THB per person
  • Property damage: up to ~800,000 THB
  • Personal accident: up to ~100,000 THB per person
  • Bail bond: up to ~200,000 THB

This is why many experienced drivers call VI your “real safety net” when driving in Thailand.

Why CI Alone Is Not Enough

Malaysian motorists often think that just by having CI, they are totally insured. That is one of the most common misconceptions. Consider this scenario:

  • You’re involved in an accident in Thailand
  • A third party is injured
  • There’s damage to another vehicle
  • Police are involved

If you have only CI, you will be under a lot of coverage restrictions. All other expenses incurred – medical, repairing or otherwise – may have to be borne by yourself. In Thailand, such expenses can easily pile up. That is why depending solely on CI is dangerous.

When Should You Consider Adding VI?

VI is highly recommended if:

  • You’re travelling with family or passengers
  • You’re driving long distances (e.g. Hat Yai, Krabi, or beyond)
  • You want peace of mind during your trip
  • You want protection against larger financial risks

For most drivers, the small extra cost for VI is worth it compared to the potential losses.

Driving through Thailand is an exciting adventure – great food, lovely sights, and enjoying the fun of a driving adventure. But what happens when you enter this country? To be safe, you should have some knowledge about your insurance coverage.

CI allows you to enter Thailand.
VI covers you during your stay.
